Large crowds gathered for Saturday's St. Patrick's Day festivities downtown.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Large crowds gathered for Saturday's St. Patrick's Day festivities downtown.

Although St. Patrick's Day is actually on a Thursday this year, Chicago will be marking the day all weekend long. Some started the day at Mass at Old St. Patrick's Church in the city's West Loop neighborhood.

Spectators gathered along the riverfront in the Loop for the annual dyeing of the Chicago River, which began at 9 a.m.

"We're going to make that river bright green today! We have a fountain on the back of the boat and we're going to lead this down the river and it's a secret formula that we dye the river with - non-toxic secret formula," said Jim Majerowicz, Plumbers Union, river dye crew.

The 33rd annual St. Patrick's Day parade downtown began at noon at Columbus and Balbo and featured many floats, bagpipes and marching bands. This year's parade Grand Marshal was Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan.

The celebrations will continue Sunday with parades on the city's South Side and Northwest Side.

Both Barccarin, 36, and McKenzie, 37, star on Fox’s Batman prequel Gotham - in which they play characters who are also expecting a baby.

Baccarin told People the Gotham plotline dovetailing with the couple's real-life was “a total coincidence. They were already planning on doing that with (our) characters when I got pregnant. When I told them they were like, 'Okay, great!' and I was like, 'What?' It worked out perfectly."

This is McKenzie’s first child. Baccarin has a 2-year-old son, Julian, with her estranged husband, Austin Chick.

Baccarin recently championed through the Deadpool press tour in February, calling herself “a million months” pregnant while visiting Access Hollywood. “No sudden moves, anybody,” she joked.

The R-rated superhero film, led by Ryan Reynolds, soared to the top of the box office, having pulled in $315 million to date.

Congratulations to the happy couple!

'Dog Whisperer' Cesar Millan blasts animal cruelty

'Dog Whisperer' Cesar Millan says animal cruelty claim misguided,An animal cruelty complaint that sent authorities to "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan's rehabilitation center has been blown way out of proportion, the dog trainer said Friday.

The complaint was started online and based on footage from Millan's television show "Cesar 911," in which a French bulldog-terrier mix named Simon chases a farm pig and nips its ear, making it bleed. The complaint is misguided because it was a happy ending — the pig was fine and the dog was rehabilitated, Millan said.

Animal control officers and sheriff's deputies visited his ranch Thursday night, but no action was taken. In a telephone interview from Iowa with The Associated Press, Millan said that when he returns from his speaking tour, he would cooperate fully with both departments.

The dog trainer who television made famous said he has used the same technique to help aggressive canines hundreds of times. The training involves getting the dog together with the animal it doesn't like (whether it is another dog, a cat or a horse) so the two can learn to get along.

Millan, 46, is a self-taught dog trainer who became internationally known for his work on a previous show, the "Dog Whisperer," which won him an Emmy nomination.

"I do have a large group of fans and a small group of people who don't agree with me. They are taking this the wrong way and blowing it way out of proportion," Millan said.

Calls and emails were not immediately returned by Los Angeles County Animal Control. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, whose deputies accompanied animal control to Millan's center in Santa Clarita, confirmed there were no arrests or animal seizures on Thursday night.

Millan was working with an aggressive dog named Simon, who was attacking his owner's pet pot-bellied pigs. A promotional clip on National Geographic's website showed Simon chasing a pig and biting its ear. The clip was altered with music from "The Exorcist" horror film and type describing what they said was happening.

Jill Breitner initiated the petition on Change.org, calling for Nat Geo WILD to take the show "Cesar 911" off the air. Friday morning, the number of signatures was closing in on 10,000.

A new clip was released Friday showing the full context of the encounter, said Chad Sandhas, senior director of talent and media relations for National Geographic Channels. In it, the pig is calm and is tied to Simon with a long leash, as if taking him on a walk.

The show initially aired on Feb. 26.

The pig was tended to immediately, healed quickly and showed no lasting signs of distress, Sandhas said.

The extra clip reveals that "Cesar and his animal pack effectively helped Simon to overcome his aggressive behavior toward other animals; as a result, Simon did not have to be separated from his owner or euthanized," he said.

In her petition, Breitner called Millan's methods "inhumane" and demanded his show be taken off the air.

"This is not the first time (Millan) has used bait animals," Breitner wrote in the petition. "This is wrong!"

Millan countered: "This is the first time I had a dog that needed help from pigs. In order for a dog to lose his fear of something, it has to become friends of it."

Ben Carson’s endorsement of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump

Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer told viewers Friday on “Special Report with Bret Baier” that Ben Carson’s endorsement of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was carefully and strategically timed to follow Thursday’s primetime debate.

“Look at how interesting and how pointed was the timing of this. Trump planned it for the morning after the debate,” Krauthammer said. “He’s always been able to steal the thunder of whatever story’s coming out of the debate.”

Krauthammer said the endorsement was “insurance” if Trump had a bad night – but in fact, the Trump campaign did not have to worry.

“Trump didn’t have a bad debate. There was no debate the night before,” Krauthammer said, “His opponents had no idea what to do, and they hung back.”

Krauthammer said this may have been a misstep on the part of Trump’s opponents, who lost a crucial opportunity to challenge the front runner.

“That could be the last chance for challenging him in that kind of a forum. [Trump] escaped completely unscathed,” Krauthammer said.

Donald Trump Chicago: Heightened tensions at rallies

Protests and racial tensions have recently escalated at Trump rallies. On Thursday, a man attending a Trump rally this week was charged with assault after he allegedly sucker-punched a black protester being led out of a Trump event.

Last fall, Trump said a Black Lives Matter protester maybe "should have been roughed up." And despite an announcement at the start of his rallies urging protesters not to be violent toward protesters, Trump in February urged his supporters to "knock the crap out of" anybody "getting ready to throw a tomato" and vowed to pay for their legal fees should they face charges.

Opinion: No room for black Valdosta students in Trump world

"Knock the crap out of them, would you? Seriously. OK? Just knock the hell -- I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. I promise, I promise," Trump said.

And Trump also said he personally wanted to punch a protester "in the face" during a rally in February.

But at CNN's Republican debate on Thursday, Trump insisted that he did not support violence at his events.

"I certainly do not condone that at all," Trump said, adding, "We have some protesters who are bad dudes. They have done bad things."
